4c:Checking Search Strings

I commented on Bernadette and Maggie's research journals.

All their keywords and Boolean looked great, I offered a couple suggestions but overall their 3b looked like they had enough to find all sorts of information on the web.

4b: Finding Books

I listed the books I found along with the websites I found in the blog posted 4A. I will just re-state what I posted.

I found multiple books that will help me explore my topic of music psychology. -I searched on Google.com for "Psychology of Music" and since I had browsed the first page before, I skipped on to the second page and began searching for more articles and information. When I came across the third page I found an E-Book that discussed the developmental of Music Psychology. It has many pages and highlighted points so I think it will be very useful in my research.

-Proved to be the same as infoplease.com, unsucessful. Once again, I typed in many different keywords, all coming up with "No Results" except for a link to Amazon.com where I could buy books related to music or psychology, but again no actual information about the topic.

3c: Brainstorming Field Research Options

5 Field Research Options:

1) Interview my Introduction to Psychology professor, professor Froyd, and get it his perspective of how the brain and mind works and why we enjoy the sound of music. Also, I will ask his opinion about the "Baby Mozart Theory" and whether children who listened to classical music as an infant are smarter than other children who did not.

2) Interview my High School choir teacher, Ms. Nguyen. I will ask her questions like why she decided to have music become her career and what music means to her.

3) Interview the lecturer during my applied assignment for psychology. Part of my grade in psychology is to attend lectures about psychology, so hopefully I might be able to schedule an interview with that spokesperson and ask him/her a few questions about music psychology.

4) Create a survey and ask to have my class mates or a variety of friends and family to listen to different kinds of music then circle what feelings they have toward that particular song/if it brings back any memories.

5) Create a short 5-10 multiple choice survey and go to a music store (FYI, Best Buy, etc) and ask people in the cd aisle, if they mind sparing a few minutes of their time to fill it out and get their view of music and how their mind reacts to music. I would have to make sure my questions are simple but also have enough information to help create a solid research paper.

2c: Developing My Research Question

My refined and developed Research question:

Throughout the centuries, music has been created to support, individualize, inspire, and influence people's lives. But behind every played note of every written song, there is the psychological perspective of how different categories of music can affect the human's learning abilities and emotional behaviors and why only certain songs bring back particualr memories or feelings from their past.




Questions I came up with for my research paper:

2b: Narrowing my Topic

I believe I will need to broaden my topic about Music Psychology. I had orginially planned on just discussing the brain functions of how music affects our emotions and why people react the way they do to different genres. I realized after the class worksheet that contained the "Who, What, Why.." questions that my topic was too narrow to create such an essay. However, after more research, I came up with other related topics, such as a child's ability to learn faster or slower depending on the type of music they listen to and whether if they are awake or asleep listening to the different genres, makes a difference. I also am interested in researching why certain songs bring back memories or feelings of the past, and why we remember them so clearly. I believe with all these different topics similar to the psychology of music, I'll be able to create a well written paper with much information.

2a-Exploring my topic

After our class discussion on the many possible search engines, I tried to take their advice and began my search on pioneer.com and the auraria library website. I tried to search thoroughly for my topic, Music psychology, but barely came up with anything strictly focused on my exact ideas for my paper. In the end, I went to Google.com and typed in "Psychology of Music". With success, it pulled up pages of informative websites focused on my topic, such as how music can affect peoples emotions and the different ways children learn from listening to different genres of music . While I have bookmarked some websites to my delicious account, I'm still searching for websites that contain information about why different types of music can bring back feelings and memories of the past, how and if music can comfort, persuade, and teach listeners through its lyrics, and the process of how the brain and sensory receptors recieve music and somehow trigger our emotions or feelings when listening to a particular song.

1b: My Topic

1) I chose my topic after one of my classmates discussed her possible idea of researching the pyschology of eating disorders. I orginally planned for my research paper to be about the history of music, ecspecially the history of Rock and Roll. I considered my classmates idea and the fact that I was taking Intro to Psychology and was really intrigued by the course, when I came up with my topic idea, the pyschology of music or musicology. I love all types of music and have always wondered why music moves us the way it does. How it can make you angry, happy, cry, or excited. Musicology will be a great topic to research with plenty of interesting information.

2) I just recently read a chapter in my Intro to Psychology book that explained what different parts of the brain make us feel or create emotions. This chapter helped explain a little more of HOW and WHY we feel the way we do to certain genres of music. However, I don't know the details of how every part of the brain and mind works to create the sensations and feelings we have toward music.

3) I believe the psychology of music will be a fascinating topic because there are all types of musicology that can be researched. I can include the phsyical steps our brain and body goes through in order to hear, comprehend, and enjoy music. I can learn about how our emotions and memories can be connected to music and why it makes us feel the way we do when our favorite or a memorable song comes on to the radio. I can research why certain people enjoy Rock music while others enjoy Classical and see if it's somehow related to that person's personality. There are many possiblities that I can research for my psychology of music topic and learn immensely from this semester.
